How to Prepare Yourself for the Zoom Hearing
Hearings are conducted a bit differently when they’re virtual.
Know how to present yourself during your Zoom hearing?
What can you expect?
The hearing probably won’t start on time, and you might be in a virtual waiting room when you join. Once the judge calls your case, all attendees will appear on your screen. You should be aware that members of the public can watch a livestream of most hearings, so you want to make sure your background isn’t distracting.
Even if you’re attending the hearing from home, you should treat the hearing as seriously as if you were at the courthouse. It’s important to make a good impression when you’re in court. Here are some guidelines to follow:
- Dress like you’re going to a job interview.
- Sit in front of a solid neutral background, if possible.
- Mute yourself when you’re not speaking to avoid background noise.
- Use a headset or headphones with a built-in microphone
- Make sure you have all paperwork you might need to consult during the hearing in front of you
- If you’re using a phone or tablet, try to prop it up securely.
Judges have also reported seeing some of the following things in remote hearings, so as a reminder:
- Do not attend a remote hearing from your bed, a moving vehicle, or any other location that a judge might find questionable.
- Do not drink alcohol or smoke during your remote hearing.
- If you live with someone else, make sure they know that you have an important court date so they can avoid walking through the background of your video.
- Make sure someone is available to take care of your pets and children during the hearing.
